Professor Keyvan Moghissiwas born in Tehran. He studied medicine at the University of Geneva where he obtained BSc & MD. His post-graduate study was in Geneva and various hospitals in the UK following which he obtained the Diploma of Specialist in Surgery (MS Chir) in Geneva and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) Edinburgh. He thenbecame Chief Assistant in Cardiothoracic Surgery in 4 of the London hospitals, namely Hammersmith Hospital, Harefield Hospital, Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and Middlesex Hospital. Hisfirst consultancy in cardiothoracic surgery was in Hull when he founded open heart surgery at the Humberside Cardiothoracic Surgical Centre. In 1982 he was honoured by receiving Membre Associe de Academie de Chirurgie and was awarded FRCS (England). He is a founder of the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery(EACTS) in 1986 and its second President in 1987. In 1989 he was awardedFellow of the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons (FETCS). In 1990 he became an Honorary Professor at the University of Hull.

His current appointments consist of:Clinical Director & Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the Yorkshire Laser Centre, UK and Honorary Consultant Thoracic Surgeon and Honorary Consultant in Laser Surgery and Photodynamic Medicine in Hull & East Yorkshire NHS Trust and North East Lincolnshire & Goole Hospitals NHS Trust. He is also theEditor in Chief of Photodiagnosis & Photodynamic Therapy.

He has been involved in research in a wide variety of subjects in cardiothoracic surgery and, more recently, in laser surgery and photodynamic therapy (PDT). He introduced laser surgery of the chest in GB and in Europe. He also was the first to undertake clinical trials in PDT for lung cancer in GB.

In connection with research he has held various appointments at Yorkshire Cancer Research Scientific Advisory Committee, Medical Research Council and is currently one of the experts for National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) on PDT in lung and oesophageal cancer and also advises the National Institute for Health Research.

He is a member of numerous societies concerned with cardiothoracic surgery and laser and PDT. In addition to his membership and past presidency of the EACTS he is a Senior Member and former Chairman of the Surgical Assembly of the European Respiratory Society, Member of the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery of GB and Ireland and former Executive Committee Member, Member and former President of the Yorkshire Thoracic Society, Member, Founder and first President of the European Platform for Photodynamic Medicine.

Professor Moghissi has received many honours in his career including a number of prizes for research and honorary membership of International Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons of India, Polish Society of Surgeons, Russian Institution of Thoracic Surgery and more recently honour for services to Cardiothoracic Surgery in the World by the World Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Professor Moghissi has published a number of books and chapters in the books in cardiothoracic surgery, laser and photodynamic therapy and has over 400 publications and presentations.

He is the Chairman of the Moghissi Laser Trust charity and Chairman of the UK Photodiagnosis and Photodynamic Therapy.

His major hobbies are languages, writing and music. For the latter whilst in Iran he was the prize winner of the music competition (violin) when he was 15 and he has a Diploma in Music (violin) from the Geneva Conservatoire Populaire.
