Laser Technologies: On the Frontiers of Fighting Diseases and Fighting for Life

Recently, our authors made an urgent appeal for the launching of an international R & D effort in the domain of the health sciences. This initiative seeks to overcome and defeat the rise, spread and proliferation of old and new infectious diseases, to end famine, and to intervene and halt insect plagues, which now confront people of the world. Central to this initiative has been the work to bring about a summit among leaders of the United States, Russia, China, India, in particular, alongside other willing parties. The agenda of such a summit includes averting the danger of global thermonuclear war, ending the pandemic, fostering a new global financial architecture firmly premised upon the promotion and advancement of human life.

Cited in this regard is the great potential to revitalize civilian economies of the world through the adoption of a new Mutually Assured Survival doctrine (MAS) to replace Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) as the premise of global defense policies. The development and deployment of advanced, directed beam technologies is the foundation of this new military outlook, begun as a policy initiative on behalf of the Reagan Presidency with the then-Soviet Union by the late American physical economist and statesman, Lyndon LaRouche.  It would function as a science-driver for the world economy much in the way JFK’s Apollo project functioned for our nation, sparking accelerating rates of economic, scientific-technological progress. One may detect that a similar spirit flows throughout the proposed “…The World Needs 1.5 Billion New, Productive Jobs”1 and “ LaRouche’s ‘Apollo Mission’ …a World Health System…”– recently released proposals by the Schiller Institute and LaRouche-associates. Both  plans pivot upon space-based endeavors such as those under way in India, as Artemis in the U.S., China’s Moon-Mars exploration activity, the ISS work and beyond of Russia.

Recent scientific work in the field of laser technology with medical applications presently exemplifies the on-going direction of this activity. Prof. Reza Fekrazad, DDS,  MSc, FLD, FICD,  a photobiomodulation  researcher of the Radiation Science Center/Laser Research Center in Medical Science (Tehran) describes crucial benefits of using the technique as Antiviral Photodynamic Therapy. Discussed in a scientific paper, “PBMT & Antiviral Photodynamic Therapy… In COVID-19 Management”3 he writes, “Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a photon therapy based on PBM that uses a light source from lasers, light-emitting diodes, and broadband light, in the visible and near-infrared spectrum. Through this mechanism, different methods such as direct laser therapy are used to target tissue, intravenous or transcutaneous lasers are used to target the bloodstream for systemic effects, and laser therapy is used to target deeper tissues such as the [passing or performed through the skull, or]  transcranial  brain.

“…It also has general effects such as metabolic effects, analgesic effects, anti-inflammatory effects, and, finally, immunomodulatory effects. It is also helpful in regenerative treatments and enhances cellular power in metabolic diseases, brain traumas, neurological diseases, cardiac diseases, dentistry, physiotherapy, physical medicine, and rehabilitation…”

He goes on to discuss how such laser therapy techniques might play a crucial role as treatment for COVID-19 patients, “…the most important method for COVID-19 management is oxygenation and faster rehabilitation of the damaged tissue, antiviral effects, and, finally, reduction or controlling the cytokine storm by reducing inflammatory agents. PBM may be used as an adjuvant therapy or even an alternative therapy in all these mechanisms without side effects and drug interactions.

“There are several advantages to these methods, such as lack of long-term toxicity and gene mutations, the ability to remove microorganisms in a very short time, less damage to adjacent tissues, the access to areas with complex anatomy, low risk of bacteremia especially in immune-suppressed patients, and high repeatability without bacterial and viral resistance. In different studies, different wavelengths were used with photosensitizers, such as curcumin, methylene blue, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), etc., to target microorganisms especially in the blood tissue. Although the viral load in blood is low, we may be able to reduce it even more with laser therapy and the right amount of photosensitizer. In addition, if we could deliver the photosensitizers to the lungs, we may be able to irradiate the laser to them. Blue wavelength does not have high penetration rates and we cannot use them from outside of the body, so we should enter or at least bring the fiber close to the lung or use intra[-]tracheal laser therapy. We may benefit from using an indo[-]cyanine green-based photosensitizer that has been used in the blood for diagnostic purposes. If we could get this substance to the lungs’ cells, it would possibly be more beneficial than other substances…”

COVID-19 Treated with PBMT in a Clinical Study

Clinician investigator, Scott A. Sigman, M.D. records results from the first COVID-19 clinical trial using  photobiomodulation laser therapy in a paper subtitled, “…First Use of PBMT in COVID-19.” The Massachusetts clinical trial includes 35 patients receiving the new treatment. The study reports one of the first COVID-19 positive patients who received the adjunctive treatment “to recover” from many of the serious, life-threatening complications which plague those infected by SARS-CoV-2 virus. This ongoing investigational randomized controlled trial employed an FDA- approved device known as the Multiwave Locked System (MLS) Therapy Laser. The non-invasive technique employs an [infrared] laser scanner, which delivers both a pulsed wavelength of 808 nm [nano meter scale] and a super-pulsed 905 nm [nano meter scale] combined into a single beam.

Administered PBMT daily, over a four-day period, a hospitalized 57-year-old African American man with severe COVID-19 received the treatment in sessions of 28 minutes duration [14 minutes per lung]. During each session, the patient assumed a prone position, lying with hands under his head to achieve the maximum extension of the scapular. A before and after treatment evaluation of the patient notes: the improvement in the radiological assessment of lung edema (RALE) by chest x-ray, (score decreased from 8 to 5), an increase in blood oxygen level -SpO2 , from 93–94% to 97–100%, with the oxygen requirement decreasing from 2–4 L/min to 1 L/min., a decrease in classification within the Pneumonia Severity Index (PSI), from Class V (142) to Class II (67), this tool calculates probable morbidity to mortality from community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Additionally, a normal result of a blood test (C-reactive protein) which measures inflammatory response, improved from 15.1 to 1.23.  The study researchers detail the complete laboratory findings in their ‘in press’ scientific paper.

At the close of the PBMT scientific paper, cited earlier, Dr. R. Fekrazad sends a message, most especially directed to other scientists, which I reproduce here: “…To sum up, this Nano particle, which can be called neither live nor non-live, is perhaps a flick or inspiration; proud and intoxicating human knowledge should attain the highest point of growth and excellence and be severely challenged so that a revolution in science is created and it warns the human beings to be prepared for the tougher challenges coming in the future. We should help each other out in any field, see each other as one, be holistic, get out of our rooms and aquariums, and take a more holistic look at science so that the ship of life on this beautiful planet continues its tranquil journey to a beautiful horizon, and be prepared to face any kind of natural or unnatural turbulence.”
